SUMMER SCULPTURES Martha's Vineyard

During the summer, I sculpt at Featherstone on Martha's Vineyard where I enjoy making more fanciful pieces.  I make Bas Reliefs for wall hangings and try my hand at multimedia works, as well as doing a few more serious sculptures.   At Featherstone, the Clay is very different from Paris, and the kiln temperature regulation is more complicated.  Two of my first Bas Reliefs exploded in the kiln, not sufficiently dried and fired at too high a temperature.  Forewarned by this disaster, I let Shelly and subsequent Bas Reliefs dry a lot longer to drive out moisture.  Otherwise, in the kiln, the super-heated steam from water trapped in small air bubbles causes the clay to explode.
